"Walk So That" is a piece I collaborated on with two others. The piece was inspired by the composer Pauline Oliveros, and her work titled "Sonic Meditations." This work by Oliveros includes several experimental music scores, one of which instructs the performer to "walk so silently that the bottoms of your feet become ears.” Inspired by this idea of sonic embodiment, my group and I decided to create a piece that links sound to movement in order to facilitate a walking meditation.

To create this piece we utilized Max/MSP/Jitter, a visual programming language for music and multimedia. "Walk So That" has some performers experience the piece, while other performers control the soundscape. The performers who experience it walk along the path of a labyrinth, while the performers who control the soundscape sit in front of computers connected to speakers along the outside of the labyrinth. The performers along the outside of the labyrinth are instructed to alter the soundscape based on the movements of the performers in the middle. Some of the performers in the middle also have smart phones attached to their legs, which are wirelessly connected to computers. When a performer with an Iphone moves, a low hum is played. The faster they move, the more harsh the low hum becomes, thus encouraging them to "walk so silently that the bottoms of their feet become ears.”
