User Experience Research Academic Project

For my final project in an advanced methods in Excel class I analyzed a dataset that was collected through user experience research of 3D thematic maps intended for visually impaired students.

First, I analyzed the demographics of the participants to see if the sample group was skewed, and if there were any trends in their responses based on their demographics. I later found there to be little to no trends based on participant demographics.

The graphs below display my findings.

I then examined and organized the data collected from the answers of the questions that each of the participants were asked to assess the effectiveness of the product.

The results revealed that question 6 gave the participants significantly more trouble than any of the other questions. Question 6 read as follows: "How many residents does Australia have?"

This highlighted that the feature for discovering number of residents in a country, was less intuitive compared to map features.

The graphs below display this finding.

Lastly, I calculated each participant's System Usability Scale (SUS) score from a dataset that included each participant’s rating response to a set of 10 statements that were derived from the System Usability Scale (SUS).

This revealed that most participants gave the maps a passing grade (>68) and deemed it a usable product. The average SUS score came out to be 70.88, earning it an overall usability grade of "B" and a "Good" rating.

I also calculated the SUS score for each question in the SUS survey to find specific areas of improvement for the product.

Question 4, which states, "I think that I would need the support of a skilled person to be able to use this map/these maps,” had the lowest score. This suggests that improvements could be made to how intuitive the maps are, to make them easier to understand for new users.
